What is a fairy tale?

If we were going by normal definitions a “fairy tale’ would be a tale of a magical nature that is used to teach us some sort of message, however is that what they really are? Everyone has a different idea of what a fairy tale is because they all have a different emotional connection to them, to me a fairy tale is something that when you tell your children at night it warms their heart, brings a smile to their face, and makes their dreams that night magical and full of wonder because to me those are some of the fondest memories I have as a child with my mother and I so when you ask me what a fairy tale is that is what is most prevalent to me as what is a fairy tale. Fairy tales have the possibility to shape the lives of children and adults across the planet so their meaning vary from person to person some people even find fairy tales to be pointless (they didn’t read enough of them) so if you ask 100 people what is a fairy tale you’ll get 100 different answers.

Snow White, Disney

When we look at the original Snow White there are a few blatant differences than the Disney Snow White. First of all there is no singing in the original Snow White, this was an add of by Disney to attract a younger demographic and sell more tickets and DVD’s. Second is that Disney changed the Dwarves giving them names, making them more childish, and sloppy making them have a reason to bring Snow White into their home besides her captivating beauty, the Dwarves in Grimm’s fairy tale were independent clean and took in Snow White for her beauty and innocence. Disney also added the cute animals to his movies to once again make the movie more appealing to the younger generation. However Snow White was just as dependent on the actions of others in both tales, she depended on the huntsman sparing her, she depended on the Dwarves taking her in, and depended on the prince to rescue her from her slumber.

“Hansel and Gretel”

The original “Hansel and Gretel” was much different than the MGM version, in the MGM version the mother was just their mother and that was the same, however the mother in the original did not regret her actions and died in the end, in the movie she regrets her actions and wants her kids back and lives. Another variation was the addition of many musical numbers (most of which were awful) this was most likely added to appeal to a younger audience and draw them in so people would come pay to see their movie. This movie also took out the part where the duck helps the children cross the river and in it’s place has them rescue fellow children, this is most likely because young kids would not understand the ducks metaphor so in it’s place they made the kids “hero’s” to appeal to kids.

Why i’m in this fys

The reason i’m in this FYS is because I’ve always loved fairy tales from the gruesome to the beautiful, it’s always interested me on how these fairy tales come into being and the impact they’ve had on cultures around the world. No one in this world has grown up without some knowledge of fairy tales and they very much impact how we see the world. I hope this seminar shows me more of the worlds culture and helps me to further understand how these fairy tales truly came into being because in my mind that is a reflection of the times they were created in and the things they struggled against. I believe my favorite fairy tale as a child was beauty and the beast because i always enjoyed the idea that beauty came from the inside and that was the most important character.
